Have you ever met someone who seemed to be so nice…until you really get to know them? Have you ever been around a couple who appeared to be so happy…but occasional looks of aggravation or anger were exchanged when they did not think you were looking? Have you ever been around people who constantly criticize their spouse or significant other and everything that they do or say? Many people act a certain way around others or in public, then change when they are in the privacy of their own home or behind closed doors, wherever that may be. Some of these people may even be considered outstanding citizens in their community… however, behind closed doors, they may actually be a “Dr.Jekell and Mr. Hyde.” No one really knows what goes on behind closed doors. However, many signs can be identified if you know what to look for.
Many abusers especially pretend to be so nice or carefree around others then blow up when no one else is around them. These abusers are so difficult to identify because they appear to be so happy, caring, or loving in the presence of others. One way to identify them is to watch the responses of their spouses, significant others, or people closest to them, including children. Only these victims know the truth and await the consequences of any anger or frustration that may have been triggered. Do these victims appear nervous? Do these victims pull away? Are they very quiet? Do they avoid eye contact? So many subtle signs can be revealed…if we take the time to watch. These victims become fearful or apprehensive as they await the possible verbal, emotional, or physical abuse that may occur when they get “behind closed doors” away from the eyes and ears of others. The true personalities of these abusers become revealed when no one is around to witness their explosive reactions. Unfortunately, many of these abusers do not even consider themselves abusive…
Luke 8:17 (NKJV)
” For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light.”
Prayer: Lord, I thank You that You see everything and nothing is hidden from You. I pray that You expose the abuses of this world and that everything done in darkness will be brought to the light in Jesus’ name… Amen.
