Domestic Violence: How do the Kids Feel?

Domestic violence…
it’s effects are real.
Harming its victims…
but how do the kids feel?

Though the children…
may not be the target.
They feel the fear…
and they won’t forget.

Fear for their mom…
running for her life.
Knowing their dad…
wants to kill his wife.

Fearing the danger…
they sense at night.
Feeling he’s near…
just out of sight.

Wanting their mom…
to learn defense.
In case he returns…
with more violence.

Many of our kids…
know what’s true.
They saw the anger…
and felt it too.

For these children…
are victims too.
Seeing the abuse…
when no others knew.

For these secrets…
were hidden at home.
Only to these victims…
the abuse was shown.

So as children grow…
and they get older.
The protection of mom…
they feel on their shoulder.

And this feeling…
my kids have today.
To take care of mom…
in a protective way.

  1. As a Psychologist, who observes “family’ in this light, I feel futile to step in or to advise. I just need to watch and forgive, in the hope that the light will shine on the situation in a way that turns the tide.
Thanks for people like you, drawing attention to such problems.
    Blessing, Paul

    • Thanks Dr. Paul… I continue to thank God for what He has done for my children and I. They still have to deal with their father… but their Heavenly Father protects them and has broken the cycle of abuse from them. They all continue to protect me from their dad and his abusive words. They have seen the difference between us and know the truth. Praise God!!

  2. This is a beautiful post and I am so thankful that God has protected your children. It is important to also bring to light that it is the parent’s responsibility to shield their children from abuse for abuse is a generational sin. What we expose our children to many times, without God’s intervention, is what is their chosen path in life.
