TRIGGERS: The Buttons to Our Souls

As we begin another week of October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I want to talk about triggers and our unplanned, spontaneous responses to things that we encounter. We are all human and composed of a body, soul, and spirit. And just as our body gets used and abused, our soul suffers the effects of these abuses. They carry the emotions which have been wounded by the words and deeds of others. And all of these emotions have triggers or buttons that get pushed which stimulate the various responses that we have to various stimuli in our lives.

Triggers…
the buttons to our souls…
where emotions are stimulated…
and their responses we behold.
For the wounds of our pasts…
hold various emotions within.
But when triggers are pushed…
spontaneous responses begin.
For many victims cry…
when certain words are spoken…
for they remember the abuses…
resulting in them being broken.
And many victims shake…
with fear rising within…
when even simple things occur…
triggering memories of abuses again.
And some people respond…
with an anger rising up…
when a trigger gets pushed…
and rage within erupts.
So these emotions all vary…
depending on what’s inside…
but when triggers get pushed…
these responses will no longer hide.
For these spontaneous responses…
result from wounds deep within…
and whether or not remembered…
abuse is where it these triggers begin.
But God can heal us all…
to the depths of our soul…
removing all our triggers…
when onto Him we hold.
For He heals the brokenhearted…
and binds up the wounds of their pasts…
and that includes all triggers…
so spontaneous responses will no longer last.

“He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3

Dear Lord, only You see the wounds deep down to our spirits and souls. You see the triggers that elicit the responses that we exhibit with simple words or acts as we unconsciously respond to these wounds. Heal all the wounds of our pasts. Remove all the triggers that stimulate these eruptions in emotions whether tears of hurt or fears or even anger and resentment.  Heal and deliver all the victims and even the abusers who were once victims where they learned the behaviors that they elicit… in Jesus’ Name, we pray. Amen.

  1. I’m sure some of these triggers take abuse victims by surprise…an unpleasant surprise! I hope that all who suffer from these horrible experiences can and will be helped by the Lord God Almighty to overcome the negative responses to triggers from their pasts.

    • You are so right… a definite unpleasant surprise. To see something that triggers an emotional response like shaking and uncontrollable crying no matter where you are is why many victims stay isolated and avoid places that they may see their abusers. Even going to a grocery store can be fearful. Crying and shaking in a store is not fun.

      • How I can well imagine! I know of living with bouts of depression and anxiety, have most of my life. I can only imagine it is so much harder to live with it in the context of an abuse victim…

  3. “And some people respond…with an anger rising up…when a trigger gets pushed…and rage within erupts.” This was me many years ago. I’m just understanding that it was “triggers” that caused me to respond in this manner, likely caused by PTSD. Thank you for sharing this.

    • Yes… Many victims become the perpetrators in response to fear that causes them to lash out in anger. It is a defense mechanism to protect themselves from the repeat of the traumas that they have endured. But God heals. I pray that He brings healing and restoration to all victims.
