Abuse Victims: Depression is a Pit That Many of Us Fall In

During October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I want to remind you all that depression tends to creep in when we are constantly berated, much less being abused with the violence that many of us see. We become trapped in a deep pit of darkness that we can’t seem to escape. But we need to remember that there is a Way out of our pits of despair. We just have to find the Key!!

Depression is a pit…
that many of us fall in.
But when we look back,
where did it all begin?
Did it start with a trauma…
that disrupted life as we know…
including anything that hurt…
like an emotional or physical blow.
Or did it start as a child…
like a genetic trait passed down…
with no clear beginning…
just recurring darkness found.
Now these types are different…
but both consume victims within.
So the big question we face…
is where did it all begin?
Now so many victims of abuse…
fall into this pit of depression.
Then when they climb out…
more abuses can cause regression.
For verbal and emotional abuse is common…
as victims are repeatedly torn down.
Then as these abuses increase…
consuming darkness is likely to be found.
Then physical abuses occur to many…
as abusers get in an outrageous fit…
and as that violence occurs…
it can throw victims back into that pit.
And sexual abuses occur at all ages…
with most by trusted or loved ones…
so is this where depression started…
with touching that should never begun.
And rape!!!
such a traumatic act…
whether by someone we know…
or by strangers in a violent attack.
And even adultery and abandonment…
is an abuse to the victim’s trust…
destroying the life they knew…
and into the pit of darkness they’re thrust.
Now all of these abuses…
throw victims into their pit of despair.
And I can understand this…
for I have surely been there.
So many victims of abuses suffer…
from this darkness that engulfs our souls…
but we can climb from this pit…
when onto God’s promises we hold.
For He loves the “brokenhearted”…
and all victims of abuses fit this mold.
So let go of the pain and heartache…
of all abuses and negative words told.
For there is a Light…
above this world that’s so dark…
so let us climb out of our pits…
trusting God as we embark.

“I waited patiently for the Lord;
And He inclined to me, And heard my cry.
He also brought me up out of a horrible pit,
Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock,
And established my steps.” Psalm 40:1-2

“Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil; For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4

Dear Lord, only You know the exact causes of the depression that engulfs our souls. You know the beginning of each and the w0unds that opened the door for the darkness to invade our lives. We ask for deliverance from the darkness. Set us free from the pits of despair that we have fallen upon. We pray for an end to the abuses that inflict wounds and total healing for every heart and soul. Shine Your Light into the darkness of our pasts and help us to know that You are the Source of all that is good and hopeful. Help us to trust You with our lives for You have plans for each of us that are good, not for harm, to give us a future and a hope. Restore our Hope!! Set us free from hopelessness!! And bring us all to new revelations with You as we climb out of our pits and into Your Presence… in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

  1. As one who suffers from depression from time to time, (more from anxiety), I know it can be an ugly pit to fall into. It can take one’s breath away during a “fit,” and leave a person feeling so hopeless. That’s why it is so important to get proper, professional help. That includes help from above in prayer to God.

He can lift a person right up and out of the pit by helping to give us the courage to change whatever it is that helps trigger depression/anxiety. I know He has helped me on many occasions. And He continues to do so. We need to get the help necessary for this problem which includes the help of the Father above!
