Parent or Friend

Parent or Friend…
now where does one end…
and the role other begin?

For parents are given control…
and children should be told…
  with Godly discipline not withhold.

But some lines get crossed…
then boundaries prematurely lost…
when parental rights are tossed.

For only when children are adults…
with good decisions and results…
then the “parent’s role” is one of consults.

For when your “children” are grown…
with adult responsibilities shown…
then the “friendship” can be known.

For parental duties end…
and a friendship can then begin…
with a dual relationship blend.

For a parent can be a friend…
to all of their children…
with Love that will never end.

Just as God desires with His children…
to be not only a Father but a Friend…
so let our deeper relationship with Him begin.

Dear Lord, Thank You for our children and please help us to raise them the way that You want them raised. That we will lead with Godly wisdom and teach them to walk in righteousness. And Lord, please help us to know when we have reached the point that we can step back into a friendship instead of parental mode. Help our children to make good decisions and to walk in Your perfect will for their lives … in Jesus’ Name.  Amen.

  1. When my children started talking to me the same way Loser did, I told them they weren’t allowed to talk to me like that. My oldest screamed “you have to decide whether you want to be our friend or our mom.”
    I never understood why I couldn’t be both….now …..I am neither.

    • Laurel, I am so sorry that this has happened to you. You were right to not allow your child to abuse you. Unfortunately, that is the cycle of abuse where the behaviors of the parents get replicated by the children as the cycle continues. I pray that this cycle will be broken in your family and that you and your children will share a Love that you have never experienced.

  2. It is not just a matter of making a decision. It is a matter of making the right decision at the right time for the person involved. One cannot do this without a firm connection to our Source Yahweh.
