Abuse: Love Shouldn’t Hurt

Love should not hurt…
and this we need to know…
for if your relationship hurts…
then “red flags” probably show.
So are you ignoring them…
and pretending that all is fine…
or are you settling for less…
and more abuse is what you’ll find.
For relationships start slow…
with our best behaviors shown…
but as time passes…
true personalities become known.
For what is secretive at first…
will not remain hidden from sight…
for abusive personality traits…
will be brought to the light.
For they can only pretend…
with their best behavior for so long…
then more and more signs will show…
with feelings that something is wrong.
Like do they get angry…
with simple or little things…
then blame you…
for the angry response it brings.
Or do they get angry…
when their TV show’s interrupted
then tend to explode…
like a volcano that has erupted.
Or do they hit walls…
then say they didn’t touch you…
pretending it’s not abuse…
that they are putting you through.
Do they yell and scream…
and criticize all that you do…
but make you think it’s OK…
for they have not physically hit you.
Well, verbal and emotional abuse…
hurts us all the same…
bringing deep wounds of brokenness…
with pain, guilt, and shame.
For these wounds are deep…
with even words that are spoken…
and leads more down wrong paths…
causing many young women to be broken.
So don’t be like the many…
who have ignored the warning signs…
closing their eyes to the hurt
settling for this “love” they did find.
But love that hurts…
is truly not “Love”…
so watch for the signs…
and pray to God above.
For He gave us the signs…
that we should watch for every day…
and if you see warning signs…
you need to go the other way.
