DV Awareness Day#29: Message to Victims– You are Born Free

This is an old song that started playing in my head this week. Now I have not heard this in years but as I listened to the lyrics, my thoughts went immediately to victims of abuse. The message that this song carries is significant for all of us and especially for victims of abuse… Born Free.

We are all born free… for our freedom was bought for a price. Christ died on the cross to bring us salvation and freedom… and the Truth will set us free when accept Christ as our Savior and call on His Name. But too many become trapped in the cycle of abuse and in bondage to others. We need to realize that like Christ, we are children of God. He has a divine plan and purpose for all of us. We don’t need to accept abuse as normal. We don’t need to accept brokenness as our lot in life. We should never have to fear or hide… for God did not give us a spirit of fear but of Power, Love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). God wants us to overcome the brokenness of our past and walk into the freedom that He has planned for us all. So why do we accept it and live in bondage to the abuses of this world. God has better plans. He has plans for good, not for harm, to give us a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11). But, we have to realize what God has done for us and walk in the freedom that His Son bought for us all.

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” 2 Corinthians 3:17

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1

“Born Free” by Matt Monro

Born free
As free as the wind blows
As free as the grass grows
Born free to follow your heart

Live free
And beauty surrounds you
The world still astounds you
each time you look at a star

Stay free
Where no walls divide you
You’re free as a roaring tide
so there’s no need to hide

Born free
And life is worth living
But only worth living
Cause you’re born free
