Addictions Are Destructive… But There’s a Chain Breaker

Addictions are destructive…
and children know it all so well…
for they watch and listen in families…
where drunkenness and abuses dwell.
And as I watched this video,
many memories came to mind…
as I remembered my own children…
and the troubled life we left behind.
For there was a day years ago…
after our marriage fell apart…
when my children poured out all alcohol…
symbolizing a new life for us to start.
For we had watched repeated drunkenness…
with the anger that flared with each.
But that day with their father gone…
they searched for every bottle they could reach.
And one by one they poured and poured…
as we all together declared NO More…
for our lives were changed forever…
when I changed the locks on our door.
And though most young children…
usually want their families intact,
some children may have enough…
and not want the abusive parent back.
And that’s what addictions cause…
with abusive acts often included…
but when the line is finally crossed…
it’s time for a chapter to be concluded.
For abuse and drunkenness…
infidelity and lust…
go hand in hand together…
destroying most family’s trust.
For wounds just can’t heal…
when they’re constantly being inflicted…
so we may need to get away…
with contact to be restricted.
And praying for deliverance…
that addictive chains will be broken…
for the cycle of abuse must stop…
and this declaration must be clearly spoken.
No more abusive acts..
and no more alcoholic attacks…
as we pray for parents…
to break chains that keep them back.
For like my children and I…
have found the Chain Breaker…
we all need to cling to Him…
for He really is the Way Maker.
For He will open the doors…
that He wants us all to go through…
and will  protect us from harm…
with healing and restoration too.

  1. I see myself in this video. My addiction was quite different though. I was obsessed with another culture and dove in too deep. I nearly drowned in that life. Worse however was that my children suffered so much.

Besides this song I also like “Flawless.”

    • Thanks Bonsai for sharing. Addictions actually come in many forms and our children are all wounded by it. But God’s grace and mercy is sufficient. He brings healing and restoration. He makes us “flawless”… I love that song too. Many blessings to you and your family!!
