Catastrophic flooding in the Houston area with Hurricane Harvey brings back many memories of the catastrophic flooding in New Orleans with Hurricane Katrina that occurred 12 years ago. It is heartbreaking to see the suffering that is occurring right now. And tears just flowed when I saw this picture of these nursing home residents patiently waiting for a rescue in rising water in Dickinson, Texas. It reminded me of the 30+ residents of St. Rita’s Nursing Home near New Orleans that drowned when the nursing home filled with water to the ceiling within about 20 minutes of the levee breaking. And I remember seeing the horrific pictures of bodies floating in the flood waters in the New Orleans streets (which can still be seen on the internet today). And as devastating as this flooding is that is occurring today, I just praise God that many are being rescued and only a few deaths have occurred. The exact death toll from Hurricane Katrina was estimated to be approximately 1800 with many bodies not recovered. And after all the fighting and arguing that we have seen this year since the presidential election, it is heartwarming to see how people come together to help others in their time of need. It is tragedies such as this hurricane and it’s catastrophic flooding that bring us as Americans back together again to help our sisters and brothers who are suffering and refocus on what is really important as we reach out to others in love. Let us all pray for the rain to stop and for all these victims of this hurricane to be rescued. We pray that all the victims and the rescuers will be safe from harm. And we pray that all that has been lost by these victims will all be restored… in Jesus’ Name, we pray. Amen.
May God help America. Amen.
