A Poem for Victims: Lingering Triggers (Psalm 107:19)

This is for the many who have suffered abuse and suffer triggers from PTSD. These triggers are real and the memories are painful. I pray for healing and restoration for all victims of abuse.

Memories! Oh, those memories…
triggering responses from the mind.
Like feeling your abuser,
coming up from behind.

Like a single word,
whispered in a threat.
Like a string of curses,
yelled with “you’ll regret”. Continue reading

TRIGGERS: The Buttons to Our Souls

As we begin another week of October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I want to talk about triggers and our unplanned, spontaneous responses to things that we encounter. We are all human and composed of a body, soul, and spirit. And just as our body gets used and abused, our soul suffers the effects of these abuses. They carry the emotions which have been wounded by the words and deeds of others. And all of these emotions have triggers or buttons that get pushed which stimulate the various responses that we have to various stimuli in our lives.

Triggers…
the buttons to our souls…
where emotions are stimulated…
and their responses we behold.
For the wounds of our pasts…
hold various emotions within.
But when triggers are pushed…
spontaneous responses begin. Continue reading

“Jesus Calling” to Victims ~~ FEAR and ANXIETY Still Plague You

As I read my Jesus Calling Devotional today for July 19th, the very issue that I have been thinking and praying about since triggering last week was addressed… FEAR. We never know when triggers of our past and any PTSD that we have suffered will surface again… but we know Who we need to give it to next time these fears, anxieties,  triggers, or any form of PTSD show their ugly head… Continue reading

PTSD: Walk a Mile in My Shoes

After a week of triggers being exposed again, I want to remind all that the triggers of PTSD are just evidence of wounds that remain down to our souls that need healing. God does not want us living in fear… for the enemy comes to kill, steal, and destroy. The enemy stole my joy this past week with these triggers but he will not win. God has already won and we are all children of God. Let us just hold onto Him for He did not give us a spirit of fear, but of Power, Love, and a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7)

Walk a mile in my shoes…

is the thought that came to me tonight.

As I think of the triggers of PTSD…

and how many don’t understand this fight.

For it is not of our own accord…

but the results of abuse and traumas done…

that cause us to have rising panic and fear…

and wanting us to leave or run. Continue reading

PTSD: When the Simplest Things Make For a Traumatic Day

This is for the many who suffer with PTSD from abuses and those who do not understand the emotional reactions that are triggered by PTSD. We never know what little thing will trigger an emotional response… till we are in a panic with tears. These triggers are real and though not understood by others, flashbacks of traumas cause these heightened  episodes of stress and fear that appear to others out of the range of normal responses… unless they have walked in the shoes of an abuse victim.

When the simplest things
make for a traumatic day.

And what should bring joy
brings fear and stress your way.

Triggers!! Triggers!! Raising Up a Fear

This is for the many who have been abused and suffer from the triggers of PTSD. No one can understand these triggers and our sudden, uncontrolled responses that occur, unless you have been there. I pray that more will understand and many will be set free from these triggers by a touch from God.

Triggers!! Triggers!!
raising up a fear…
whenever I see him…
or even sense he’s near.
Why does he stand…
behind a glass wall to stare…
when the building is huge…
and I shouldn’t know he’s there. Continue reading
