A Father’s Day Reminder: Ephesians 6

For Father’s Day, I want to share this poem as a reminder of the instructions that God gave us for treating our children. Many children struggle with “honoring” their parents who are abusive to them… but God gave parents instructions also… We just need to remember them.

Honor your father and mother…
are instructions in Ephesians 6.
But it also comes with a warning…
for honor and anger don’t mix.
So for this Father’s Day
I have this reminder to share.
For I have watched my children…
and these struggles are not fair.

We would all love to be honored…
and treated with love and respect.
But if we are abusive to others…
how can these blessings we expect.
Children naturally love their parents…
and want to honor them every day.
But honor can’t be expected…
when parents treat children this way.

Yelling and screaming…
hitting and putting down…
are some of the abusive acts…
where honor will not be found.
But children try to obey…
despite their parent’s abuse…
with rejection and abandonment…
being felt through this misuse.

So fathers and mothers…
please be careful how you act!
For children want to love and honor…
and this is a well known fact.
Please heed God’s instructions…
Do not provoke your children with abuse.
Treat them with love and kindness…
for the cycle of abuse is no excuse.

“Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.”

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.” Ephesians 6:1-4

  1. Secret Angel, I was just thinking about this verse on yesterday, Ephesians 6:4–Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. For the most part, this verse is generally overlooked. Basically, we are to honor the parents that loved, nurtured and cherished the gift that God bestowed upon them.

    • Amen… You are so right. That verse is often overlooked or ignored. My children learned this verse quickly because their dad repeatedly told them that they had to “honor” him… but he never read the next verse. God’s instructions are very clear. But all we can do for some is pray for them. God bless you my sister!!

      • This is why it is so important for us to know the Word so that no one can use it against us, for their own benefit. We have to be ready to say, “The Word also says…” Bless you too. Your blog touches my heart.

      • Amen…His Word is sharper than a 2-edged sword!! And thank you Lynette for your kindness and support. God is so good to touch hearts with the words that He gives us. We serve an awesome God!!
